Flekkefjord is home to one of Southern Norway's most iconic fjords – a place where vibrant coastal culture meets magnificent nature.
The fjord was first charted by Dutch sailors seeking safe trade routes across the North Sea, and is known for its majestic Entrance through Hidrasundet. For centuries, the protected bay at Kirkehamn has been a safe harbour against the harsh northern seas – and still serves today as a regular port of call for the Royal Ship.
After passing the idyllic islands of Hidra and Andabeløy, with their charming coastal communities, the fjord turns north towards steep mountains shaped by the last ice age. Here the waters narrow dramatically – at times to just 100 metres wide – before sliding through Grønnesundet and opening onto a peaceful natural harbour, home to the historic town of Flekkefjord.
From the harbor it is a short walk to the Dutch Town, the pedestrian streets and the river promenade. Many guests also choose to cross the fjord in small, traditional wooden boats and enjoy a relaxing time in our local sauna, with a great view of the city.
Flekkefjord offers a wide range of excursions, including island adventures to Hidra and Andabeløy, guided tours and speedboat trips to remote fjord landscapes. Cycling on rails is also a popular activity. With electric trolleybuses available on request, trips of up to 34 kilometers in hilly terrain can be arranged along historic tracks once used by steam locomotives.
Beyond its spectacular scenery, Flekkefjord is a living testament to maritime tradition and cultural strength. For centuries, the local community has lived by and with the sea – from Dutch traders navigating safe routes, to local fishermen shaping a distinctive coastal lifestyle. Today, history and modern experiences blend seamlessly as our guests explore cobblestone streets with white wooden houses, visit Hidra’s maritime history and take part in hands-on courses in local cuisine and crafts.
As an exclusive cruise destination, Flekkefjord offers excellent service to operators and practices a one-boat-per-day policy. To ensure a personal welcome and the highest possible quality of experience, we limit visiting cruise ships to a maximum length of 200 meters.
Welcome to a genuine and heartwarming destination – perfect for expedition cruises seeking authenticity, beauty and cultural heritage. With roots in the charm and hospitality of Southern Norway, Flekkefjord prides itself on making every guest feel at home in our fjord community.
